This 1992 Deutsche Grammophon recording conducted by Claudio Abbado with the Vienna Philharmonic captures the work in all its mysterious beauty. The opera, based on Maeterlinck's symbolist play, eschews grand opera conventions for something more intimate and dreamlike. The cast includes soprano Maria Ewing and baritone Franois Le Roux
