They were used to transport coal from the many collieries dotted around Newcastle etc. A typical train length was 28 wagons per loco and they were finally withdrawn from service in 1977.

Runs much larger than I expected. I am 5’4”& 136 pounds. Usually wear a medium or large in some knit tops. So I need to stitch the side seams in hopes it will fit better. I like the weight and softness of the fabric, but really disappointed in the too large armholes. Unwearable for me until I can sew new side seams.
