The top of the panel is covered with the black lightning cloth material, with the bottom in black vinyl separated by a red plastic piping. I'm putting up shelves around my bed for my books, and so far, the first shelf is holding nicely with these brackets. They seem pretty sturdy and were easy to install with the screws and anchors that came with it. I measured out where i wanted the brackets on the board and then screwed them to it. I then held it against the wall and used a level to make sure it was level, then put a screw in the middle bracket to hold it level while i marked the rest of the screw holes. I did this all by myself, but it would've been a lot easier to do with two people. I plan to buy more and put up more shelves
